Multiple Intelligences

"Everybody has it's own unique combination of intelligences"

Howard Gardner designed 8 Intelligences that should be considered in teaching a language.

I got to know through our workshop lecturer Alike Last that it is very essential to have this modell in mind when you are preparing a lesson. You have to think that every child has another strength, therefore it is important to advance every child in his own intelligence.

We heard about three key points of considering MI in the language lesson:

1) Matching - You use as a teacher materials and teaching methods
                         which supports childs MI combination

2) Stretching - You use other methods to stretch the children's combination
that they can develop new MI skills

3) Accepting & celebrating - Pupils should learn to accept and appreciate
                                                     the facilities they have

I can learn the best, when I can visualize the things that I have to learn. Because of this it was always useful when teachers made illustrations, images and drawings of the topic they taught.

Can you tell me which Multiple Intelligences do you have and how could it be supported by the teacher?

  1. I think I can understand better when I have an example, so I would say that my intelligence is Kinesthetic. When the teacher is telling the class how to do an activity, the best for me would be that she does it fist or at least start doing it for me to see how it works. But that is not always possible, so then I need to use another intelligence. That's the same for teacher because they cannot always teach the pupils using all the intelligences but it is good when they use some of them.

  2. Illustrations are indeed a great deal to learn faster. Personally I need relations to real world application of the matter. That way I can always rely on my logical thinking and also deal with the most abstract and difficult theoretical tasks.

As an example: When there is a huge math problem it helps me a lot when I know where it can be used. That way I can imagine how it must work in theorie which makes it a lot easier for me to work my way through the problem or task.

  3. When I'm thinking about my MI, the first one in my mind would be the visual - spatial intelligence. Together with my logical - mathematic intelligence it is a mixture quite contrary to the two MI mixes in the comments before.
For me it's enough to read about a problem and think about it. acctualy I don't need much pictures or examples, in fact, sometimes they confuses me more than they help...

  4. I think my intelligence is visual-spatial. often when i saw something I can remember it. when I only eared something I can't remember me what it was. I think the teacher can support it with a lot of differents pictures of the issue.

  5. I´m the visual-spatial type with a bit of Interpersonal and Bodily-Kinestethic. I think everybody has more than one of these intelligences. The teacher just has to combine everything and teach some lessons in other ways.
A combination of input, work, creativity would be good.

  6. My strongest intelligences are linguistic, interpersonal and intrapersonal. I think it is important to try and incorporate all of the intelligences into lessons, not all of them can be supported at once in one session but alternating between them in different lessons could work. I think teachers must constantly change their lesson methods.
